NTD: Northern California rally calls for support for Proposition 36 for safety

Ray Wang Former Cupertino Planning Commissioner Chair Speaking at Prop 36 Rally

[ New Tang Dynasty Beijing Time October 1, 2024] Crime in California is becoming more and more rampant, with broken windows , robberies , and zero-dollar purchases. In order to reduce crime, Northern Californians gathered in Cupertino on Sunday (September 29) to call for support for Proposition 36.

On Sunday (29th) in front of the Cupertino Library, Bay Area elected officials explained why they needed to support Proposition 36 in order to maintain community safety.

Saratoga Mayor Zhao Yan: "First, it will punish repeat offenders. Second, it will give police and law enforcement officers a chance to prosecute people who commit crimes frequently. Third, you can also see that looting and vandalism are very harmful to small businesses. Fourth, I think Proposition 36 is good because it also gives drug addicts a chance to get treatment."

California Proposition 36 will increase the charges for repeat offenders of theft and drug possession. If a repeat offender is caught possessing drugs three times, he or she will need to complete a drug rehabilitation program or face felony charges. Supporters hope that the proposal will enhance public interest and deter criminals.

Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein: "From a city council and mayoral perspective, I'm ready to take steps to make our community safer, and it's important to me that we actually have Proposition 36 to deal with recidivism and drug treatment."

Proposition 36 is mainly to overturn Act 47 passed in 2014. Act 47 advocates that theft of less than 950 yuan or personal possession of drugs below the limit should be reduced from felonies to misdemeanors, and the defendant does not have to go to jail.

Supporters believe that this not only threatens community safety, but will also have a serious impact on the education and safety of the next generation.

Li Yijing, a member of the high school union school district committee, said: "If this kind of criminal behavior continues, our next generation may be harmed by robbery , broken windows, theft, and even drug abuse. Therefore, for the sake of our next generation, we really have to support Proposition 36."

"If you support Proposition 36, you'll see a difference in the level of public safety, you'll see that we can get people off the streets, get people out of the cycle of addiction, and more importantly, this is an opportunity for us to really do some good things," said Ray Wang, former Cupertino Planning Commissioner.
