Meet Ray

Cupertino City Council candidate R “Ray” Wang grew up in the rust belt of Allentown, PA.  His parents immigrated from Taiwan in the 1960’s in search of the American dream.  Mom was a special education teacher and sought a Master’s in Education, while Dad came from a rural farming family and received a scholarship for a Master’s in Chemical Engineering, ultimately completing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.

He also co-founded many student groups to improve cultural diversity. Ray’s first two startups were founded while in college, including a community newspaper and an entertainment company.

Ray moved to the Bay Area in 1996, and worked at various companies including Deloitte, Oracle, and Ernst & Young. After leaving Forrester Research as one of the top research analysts in the firm, he joined several colleagues in creating a startup advisory firm which led to a successful exit.

Ray Wang Cupertino Planning Commission

Ray Wang is running for Cupertino City Council to represent our diverse, vibrant, and hard-working community. As the son of immigrants, he understands the importance of hard work, strong family values, the need for diversity, and the power of creating opportunities for others. Ray’s wife, Tina, came to the US when she was 10. She has been a physician in the Bay Area since 2000. Their son is a Senior in college, and their daughter is a Junior in high school.

Ray served on the Cupertino Planning Commission, leading as chair twice. During his service, he worked hard to ensure that residents’ rights were restored in planning decisions, and new projects such as Westport were approved without infringing upon resident rights. Ray championed efforts to protect the suburban quality of life that Cupertino residents expect, from Dark Skies programs to a housing element plan that did not destroy Cupertino’s suburban character. Ray also advocated for residents on issues such as 5G towers and their architectural standards.

Ray believes in the importance of listening to all sides of the community and collaboratively working to find solutions that will benefit the city not just for the short term, but also for decades to come. Ray Wang understands the power of partnering with residents, businesses, and city staff to enable Cupertino to achieve its full potential.
